In collaboration with colleagues at NWFSC-Newport and University of California, Davis, Bodega Marine Laboratory, we are implementing identical sampling protocols (vertical ring net tows) to assess spatial and temporal variability in the biomass and community structure of the copepod assemblage across ten degrees of latitude in the northern California Current.

With support from NOAA’s Fisheries and the Environment (FATE) program, we are pursuing two complementary efforts focused on development of environment-recruitment indices suitable for inclusion in assessments for several rockfish (Sebastes spp.) stocks.

Using samples collected during routine ocean observing cruises, we are evaluating the role of hydrographic structure, and fronts in particular, in determining the cross-shelf distribution of larval fishes off northern California, with a particular emphasis on the distribution of larval rockfishes.
