Collecting fish with seine Salmon Ecology Team researchers collect salmonids in the Scott Creek lagoon using a seine, a net that hangs vertically from floats. For each fish caught, the researchers record information such as tag number, length, and weight. Samples are taken for ageing and genetic analysis, after which the fish are released. Collecting data on fish Salmon Ecology Team researchers Ellen Freund and Morgan Bond collect data on salmonids caught using a seine in the Scott Creek lagoon. During data collection the researchers: Record the PIT tag number that individually identifies each fish (Morgan is holding the tag reader). Tag the fish if it's untagged. Record the length and weight. Take a scale sample for determining the age of the fish. Take a small piece of fin for a genetic sample. When the data collection is complete, the fish are released. Great blue heron A great blue heron stands on a fyke net, a large hoop net that acts as a funnel to trap swimming fish. This particular net is acting as a downstream smolt trap in Scott Creek, above the lagoon. Salmon Ecology Team researchers collect salmonids caught in the net and record information such as tag number, length, and weight. Samples are taken for ageing and genetic analysis, after which the fish are released.
