Summary: The oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, is a large pelagic shark inhabiting tropical and warm temperate seas. It is named for its rounded, white-tipped fins.

Although Southwest Fisheries Science Center does not do any direct research on oceanic whitetip sharks, they are occasionally encountered during our research cruises. When this occurs, their length is measured, gender determined, DNA taken, and they are sometimes tagged to learn more about their movements.

Oceanic whitetip shark tagging Carcharhinus longimanusThis closeup shows a satellite tag attached to the dorsal fin of an oceanic whitetip shark. The shark was caught, tagged, and released alive during a research cruise near Clipperton Island in 2004. Every time the dorsal fin breaks the surface, the satellite tag transmits data to a satellite, and then to researchers' computers who can track the shark's movements.
