The NMFS autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, before deployment from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier. The AUV is rotated on its side to show the bottom instrumentation, which includes a 38 kHz echosounder, a camera with strobe, and an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP). The AUV is programmed to conduct dives and return to the surface where it can be retrieved.
