Track Antarctic predators on their winter journey through the Southern Ocean with the AMLR Program!
During the austral summer of 2010/2011, AMLR scientists tagged 50 Antarctic predators: chinstrap penguins, Antarctic fur seals, leopard seals and gentoo penguins. All of these animals were tagged at Cape Shirreff, the field camp represented by the western-most flag - learn more about both our field camps by clicking on the flags. The tracks are updated weekly, so check back often!
The map below tracks the movements of individuals, by species, beginning in March of 2010. Ice coverage over 20%, analyzed by the National/Naval Ice Center, is represented by white. Ice coverage over 80% is represented by light blue. For best results, choose the settings (wrench) icon by the scroll bar at the top left of the map and select loop animation, then slow the animation to half-speed or less. You can also stop animation and use the scroll bar to choose a specific date. Click on individual lines to learn more about the animal that is being tracked.
