Entering the Delta submersible Researcher Mary Yoklavich enters the Delta submersible for a dive off San Nicolas Island, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. Together with researchers from UC Santa Barbara, Mary's team uses the Delta to assess fish assemblages in deep water. This particular cruise focused on cowcod within the Cowcod Conservation Area. The Delta submersible returns The Delta submersible returns to the boat after a successful dive off Anacapa Island, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. On this cruise, data from observers inside the submersible were calibrated by having the observers count fake fish of known sizes and distances from the sub. Launching the Dual Deepworker Submersible A scientist and pilot inside the Dual DeepWorker submersible are launched off the stern of the fishing vessel Velero IV. Collaboration with the fishing industry enhances our research by leveraging the knowledge and expertise of the fishermen to successfully launch, retrieve, and track the manned submersible underwater. Without the F/V Velero IV and its crew, the fishermen's tools and necessary skills would be unavailable to our scientists. Also, by contracting with the fishermen of the Velero IV, we have fostered a longterm understanding of our science among members of the fishing community.
