Researchers from the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Kevin Stierhoff and John L. Butler, in collaboration with Melissa Neuman from the Southwest Regional Office, have recently published “On the road to extinction? Population declines of the endangered white abalone, Haliotis sorenseni” in the Journal of Biological Conservation. The article discusses the history of the white abalone’s population decline from 2001 and states that captive propagation and enhancement is now likely the only way to prevent extinction.
