Eric Bjorkstedt of the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division served as chief scientist on the second PaCOOS sampling cruise aboard the R/V Coral Sea out of Humboldt State University (HSU). The cruise took place on November 1-2 during of a short window of favorable weather to occupy six stations along a 25 nautical mile transect off Trinidad Head. Operations were suspended en route to the seventh station, as the vessel encountered increasingly stiff winds (30+ knots) and building seas.
Bjorkstedt led a scientific crew consisting entirely of students and alumni from HSU's Fisheries Biology and Oceanography programs. Paul Mann, of HSU's Department of Public Affairs, also sailed as an observer to gain a real-life perspective in support of his efforts to promote and publicize marine research, including PaCOOS, at HSU.
