Introduction
The SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division conducts research and activities to aid in the protection and recovery of endangered and threatened species. The focus is on certain populations of west coast salmonids, with some additional work in response to a request to list green sturgeon.

North American Green Sturgeon
In 2001, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) received a petition requesting Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing of North American green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris ) as a threatened or endangered species. In response to this petition, NMFS conducted the following ESA status review.

Based on further research after the 2002 review, NMFS issued a rule listing the Southern population segment of green sturgeon as threatened in 2006:
