A major mission of the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division is to monitor the status of protected species in U.S. waters or waters where the U.S. has a vested interest. Most of this monitoring is conducted aboard NOAA research vessels. Ship-based surveys typically take a multidisciplinary approach and consist of studies of protected species abundance, distribution, and biology, as well as ecosystem research.
A geographic visualization of this research activity is presented below for the period from 1986 to 2010. The information is presented for five regions. Select a region to get more information about research in a specific area or select a project to zoom to the project extent (and then click on the project area to get more information about it; click outside the resulting information window to remove it from display).
