Previous estimates of marine mammal abundance were only available for large areas, making it impossible to estimate the impact of activities within an area. Habitat models represent an improvement over previous estimates because we can predict species distributions on a smaller-spatial scale. These predictions can be used to incorporate marine mammals into any planning exercise (e.g., placement of shipping lanes, development of renewable energy, placement of protected areas, etc.). For all anthropogenic activities the goal is to reduce impacts by recommending locations for the activity that are in areas of low marine mammal density. When recommending locations for protected areas, we wish to ensure that they occur in areas of high density.
