Scientists in the Fisheries Research Division have pioneered the development and use of acoustic technologies for non-lethal surveys of protected species, such as rockfish, and for the detection of schools during ship-based surveys for species such as sardine. Scientists in the Protected Resources Division have pioneered the development and use of acoustic technologies for the detection of cetaceans during assessment surveys. The group has a strong library of cetacean recordings from throughout the central and eastern North Pacific Ocean.
