2010 Pacific Sardine Workshop

Workshop on Enhancing Stock Assessments of Pacific Sardine in the California Current through Cooperative Surveys

The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) and Northwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC), in partnership with stakeholders in the Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax caerulea) fisheries of the United States, conducted a Workshop on Enhancing Stock Assessments of Pacific Sardine in the California Current through Cooperative Surveys in June 2010. The objectives of this Workshop were to achieve common understandings among stakeholders regarding the: (1) advantages, limitations, challenges with, and possible improvements to, survey methods relevant to estimating biomass for stock assessments in 2011 and beyond; (2) identity of current investigators and users of each method; and (3) opportunities for collaboration.

Stock assessment of the Pacific sardine resource is regularly produced for the Pacific Fishery Management Council and depends on abundance information from two surveys, the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) conducted by the SWFSC and an aerial survey conducted by the sardine industry, that provide an estimate of total abundance and a minimum estimate of abundance, respectively.

Workshop participants also discussed collaborative projects that could minimize the limitations and/or augment the objectives of these two surveys while leveraging existing resources and began plans for some future collaborations.
