Aleutian Islands Killer Whale Cruise, Bering Sea, Alaska

Scientists from SWFSC, the National Marine Mammal Laboratory, and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center are conducting a survey of killer whales along the Aleutian Islands. This is a repeat survey of one in 2006, and aims to assess the abundance, distribution and movement patterns of killer whales, particularly Bigg's killer whale (mammal-eaters, also referred to as "Transients"). Scientists are conducting biopsy sampling and satellite tagging. The survey began on June 24, and is off to a good start. Three groups of killer whales have been encountered in the first two days, along with Baird's beaked whales and sperm whales.
