Spring CalCOFI Survey is Underway

Since 1949, The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), a unique partnership among NOAA Fisheries Service, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the California Department of Fish and Game, has been monitoring the California Current. The information is used to better understand the marine environment off the coast of California, relevant to the management of its living resources in a changing climate. CalCOFI conducts quarterly cruises off southern & south-central California, collecting a suite of hydrographic and biological data on station and underway. This season's survey is conducted upon NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada and R/V Ocean Starr (formerly NOAA Ship David Starr Jordan now operated by Ocean Services, Inc)

The researchers post near real-time maps of the relative number of fish eggs for coastal pelagic species (sardine, jack mackerel, anchovy) collected using the continuous underway fish egg sampler and super-imposed on satellite sea surface temperature maps.
