2007 Juvenile Rockfish Survey Completed

The SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division’s annual midwater trawl survey for young-of-the-year (YOY) rockfish (age ca. 100 days) was completed on the NOAA ship David Starr Jordan, with 182 trawls conducted from San Diego to Pta. Delgada off Mendocino. A total of 6425 YOY rockfish were collected. However, 5451 of these were collected on the last two nights of trawling off San Clemente Island and San Diego, so catches north of Point Conception remain extremely low for the third year in a row. In addition, the majority of the YOY rockfish were small (less than 30mm).

Catches of YOY Pacific hake were also low with 1747 juveniles caught. The largest catches of YOY Pacific hake occurred in the northern portion of the survey area off Mendocino. In addition, 40 Humboldt squid were collected via hook-and-line off San Clemente Island and San Diego, and in northern California from Monterey Bay to Mendocino. 8232 larval anchovy and 7177 larval sardines were also collected for Motomitsu Takahashi, a post-doc with Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
