Jumbo Squid Tagged to Study Ecology and Movement Patterns

Three jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) were captured, fitted with Pop-up Archival Transmitting (PAT) tags, and released over Cordell Bank as part of a Sea Grant funded collaboration to investigate jumbo squid ecology and movement patterns. Cruise participants included John Field of the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division, William Gilly and Julie Stewart of Hopkins Marine Station, and Christine Huffard of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Insitute. Ship time was provided by the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Oceanographic data were also collected, as the overarching objectives include an evaluation of how squid are utilizing the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) and whether a shoaling of the OMZ could be a contributing factor to the ongoing range expansion.
