Ocean Salmon Survey 2012

In June the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division’s Salmon Ocean Ecology team performed the southern-Oregon / Northern-California portion of the annual coast-wide salmon survey, covering marine waters from Newport, Oregon to Pigeon Point south of San Francisco.

Catch remained high for the maturing Chinook age 2.5+ cohort (Klamath and Central Valley stocks in this year’s fishery), which was first observed to be strong in summer 2010 as subyearling fish, and again in summer 2011 as age 1.5 fish. Last year’s sub-yearling cohort has been observed in reasonable numbers this year as age 1.5 fish, but lower density than the previous cohort, and fewer sub-yearlings have been observed from this year’s cohort.
