Jumbo Squid Research Projects

On February 12 Ken Baltz tagged and released jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) from the Party boat Huli Cat (Half Moon Bay). The squid were caught over Pioneer canyon, just west of the HMB weather buoy. Stomach samples were also taken from approximately 20 squid for food habits research currently being conducted by Ken Baltz and John Field. We are tentatively planning on tagging up to 6 jumbo squid in the near future with pop-up satellite tags in cooperation with Hopkins Marine Station (TOPP - Tagging of Pacific Pelagics) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Whole live squid were also transported to the Santa Cruz Lab to test survivability during automobile transport. The MB Aquarium has expressed interest in bringing live adult jumbo squid back to the aquarium for breeding and display purposes. (February 20, 2006)
