MPA Science Integration Meeting

The working group to integrate the science of marine protected areas (MPAs) with fishery science and management had a fourth meeting at the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division in Santa Cruz, July 17-19, 2006. The group of approximately 24 NOAA, academic and industry scientists shared with each other final and interim products in the topic areas of connectivity, guidelines for natural heritage MPAs, and how MPAs affect traditional stock assessments. Several products have already been published or are in press with peer-reviewed journals. Future topics proposed for the science integration effort include a) genetic effects; b) maternal effects; c) MPA based approach for data-poor fishery management; d) institutional barriers; e) multivariate approaches to evaluating common ecosystem currencies; and f) benthic pelagic linkages.
