Over the last 25 years I have worked extensively on age and growth of commercial groundfish. I have also worked on different techniques for aging groundfish. I also provide direct support to stock assessment authors by aging fish and assisting them with obtaining data. An important component of my work is to help manage the California Commercial Groundfish Survey which is responsible for collecting market samples. In addition to this, I am responsible for maintaining the laboratory’s SQL Servers and assisting personnel with managing and accessing databases.

I have been working for the Groundfish Analysis Team since 1992 primarily on the rockfish recruitment and ecosystem assessment midwater trawl survey on which I currently serve as the cruise leader/chief scientist and database manager. My research interests include early life history taxonomy of marine fish (with an emphasis on rockfish) as well as examining the oceanographic factors that affect recruitment strength.

I'm a quantitative fisheries ecologist and am interested in fisheries stock assessment and the population dynamics of marine species. I'm currently working on a stock assessment model for southeast Alaskan sea otters. Sea otters were translocated to southeast Alaska in the 1970s and we want to understand their spatial population dynamics and predict future population trends. I’m also investigating modeling approaches used to develop indices of abundance from observer data for use in stock assessment models. In addition to my research, I enjoy teaching environmental education and mentoring students to prepare them for careers in the sciences.

My research interests include identifying spatial and temporal patterns in both marine and freshwater environments, in particular how historical activities shape modern-day landscapes. I joined the Santa Cruz NMFS lab in 2011, after completing my masters degree in Fisheries Science and Geography at Oregon State University which focused on legacy effects of historical logging practices on streams. Presently, I identify spatial and temporal patterns of commercial and recreational fish catches from the years 1930s - 2010s along the California Coast. Examples of work are catch species diversity, abundance and extent through time and space. I also use GIS to help assist in various research projects, including study design planning, spatial data management, and producing maps for publications and groundfish stock assessments.

I am interested in ecology and ecosystem dynamics of marine fishes. Recent work has been on stock assessments of west coast groundfish species. Specific research interests include stock assessment methods, and implications of stock assessments to fishery managements.
