Figure 2. State-space modeling and missing data. The state-space decompostion can handle missing data as part of the algorithm As an example, the two time series are from the Gulf of Alaska region (top of each panel). The red lines represent the actual observed subsurface data, the gray the estimates from the complex Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) model. The bottom panel shows the trend term estimated for each from the state-space model. The trend estimated from even the very sparsely observed data is very close to that estimated from the SODA data.
