Mary Yoklavich (SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division) convened a meeting of the NMFS Habitat Assessment Improvement Plan (HAIP) team in Silver Spring, Maryland. Mary held a briefing with Steve Murawski, Pat Montanio, Dave Detlor, and Sam Pooley, and made a brown-bag presentation to about 50 headquarters staff on HAIP progress.
The HAIP evaluates NMFS’ current capabilities and unmet habitat science needs, especially as related to ecosystem-based management, improved stock assessments, and sustainable fisheries. The HAIP establishes the framework to coordinate NMFS’ diverse habitat research, monitoring, and assessments, and will guide NMFS in developing appropriate budget alternatives and increased support for habitat science.
