Fisheries Ecology Division researchers Steve Ralston, John Field, Don Pearson and Meisha Key completed a first draft of a manuscript that describes and documents the California historical catch reconstruction project. This effort centered on fulfilling a Pacific Fishery Management Council request to develop a single methodology for estimating historical catches of groundfish to the species level for use in West Coast Groundfish Stock Assessments. The reconstruction relied heavily on an ongoing effort to digitize historical data supported by NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service's Climate Database Modernization Program (NESDIS/CDMP) to digitize historical block summary data and commercial landings receipts back to 1916.
The draft document will be distributed to stock assessment authors for use in this year’s stock assessments and will be developed into a Technical Memorandum in the near future.
