Habitat Ecology Job Opening - Quantitative Spatial Ecologist Postdoc

February 1, 2011

UPDATE: This position is now closed.

The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in association with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), seeks a postdoctoral scholar/quantitative spatial ecologist to conduct habitat-specific assessments of demersal marine fish species off the west coast. Specific objectives are (1) to develop statistical models using associated habitat variables to predict densities of individual demersal fish species and multi-species fish assemblages, and (2) to couple these models with broad-scale seafloor habitat maps in a geographical-information-systems (GIS) environment to forecast fish densities on a regional basis. The appointee will work with NMFS scientists to compile appropriate data and to develop and evaluate various models. Results will be submitted as reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts, and presented at scientific conferences. Results will contribute to the conservation and management of sustainable marine fisheries and habitats and will advance our understanding of the ecological processes that influence distribution and abundance of marine fishes.
