Researchers from the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division's Habitat Ecology Team and the USGS Pacific Coastal & Marine Science Center have collaborated to create the Monterey Bay Marine GIS User Group to support GIS training, capacity building and increased awareness of marine spatial data sets among the broader GIS science community in the Monterey Bay area. Started in January 2012, the group aims to foster collaboration among academic, private, state and federal agencies and NGO's in the region.
The new group has generated great interest, bringing together almost 100 coastal-GIS data users, marine researchers, and policy makers for the inaugural meeting in January. The group will be meeting again in July, as well as providing members with a training workshop on the use of MGET (Marine Geospatial Ecology Tool), an open source geoprocessing toolbox designed for coastal and marine researchers and GIS analysts.
