Genetic Matchmaking in California Salmon Hatcheries (New York Times)

A front page story in the New York Times on Sunday January 17 highlighted the work of SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division scientists John Carlos Garza and Libby Gilbert-Horvath. The genetic broodstock management (matchmaking) technique for avoiding inbreeding and maximizing genetic diversity that they pioneered is now being used by conservation hatchery programs throughout California and the western US.
