Alternative Survey Platforms

To meet NOAA’s goal of ecosystem-based fisheries management, huge quantities of multi-disciplinary data must be efficiently collected on the temporal- and spatial-scales of the ecosystem dynamics, at the locations of critical biotic and abiotic interactions.  In particular, the oceans’ boundary areas (e.g., near-shore, near the sea surface or under ice, and near the sea floor), must be efficiently sampled on large time- and space-scales.  To accomplish this, conventional survey platforms (e.g. fisheries survey vessels), must continue to be augmented with sensor platforms such as satellites, small-craft, buoys, and autonomous underwater vehicles(AUVs).
