Thresher Shark Genetic Analyses

A study was initiated to determine the stock structure of common thresher shark through genetic analyses of tissue samples taken from animals from different Pacific Ocean locations. Part of the lab analysis was completed in fall 1998, though samples were still lacking from Hawaii area.

Analyses of biopsies collected off the U.S. West Coast and Mexico, grouping and comparing samples from off Oregon/Washington with samples collected off California and Baja California, Mexico, showed no significant differences in haplotypic frequencies, indicating a single homogenous West Coast population. Samples are continuing to be processed, and the analyses should be completed sometime in the year 2000.
