Short-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala acrorhychus)

Short-finned pilot whale sightings made during aerial and shipboard surveys conducted off California in 1975-83 by the Minerals and Management Service (red plus signs) and off California, Oregon, and Washington, 1991-96 by NMFS/SWFSC (red circles). NMFS/SWFSC ship surveys were conducted in California, Oregon, and Washington waters out to 300 nautical miles in summer and autumn (Mangels and Gerrodette 1994, Barlow 1995, 1997, Von Saunder and Barlow 1999), while aerial surveys were conducted in California waters out to 150 nautical miles in winter and spring (Forney et al. 1995). Transect lines completed during older Minerals and Management Service (MMS) surveys from 1975-83 are not shown (Dohl et al. 1980, 1983).
