Skua research at the SWFSC is conducted by researchers in both the Antarctic Ecosystem Resources and the Marine Mammal & Turtle Divisions.
At-sea distribution and abundance of skuas (and all other seabirds) is collected as a part of the Marine Mammal & Turtle Division Marine Mammal and Ecosystem Assessment surveys in the eastern tropical Pacific, California Current, and central Pacific. See Seabirds for more information.
Skuas are predators of Antarctic fur seal pups and penguin chicks. As such, researchers in the Antarctic Ecosystem Resources Division monitor the local populations of skuas at two field camps (Cape Shirreff and Copacabana) off the Antarctic peninsula. For further information is available at the Antarctic Seabirds Research Program webpage.
