When access is difficult by sea (for instance along rocky shores) or the scale of a survey area large, SWFSC scientists take to the sky to conduct surveys on the distribution and abundance of species that can be spotted on the surface of the water such as marine mammals and turtles.  The Photogrammetry Program collects high resolution vertical aerial images of marine mammals to determine the number of animals present in large aggregations, to determine stock identification based on morphometrics, and to estimate reproductive and nutritive condition of individuals based on their size and shape.
